Feeling tired, have a headache and a long clinic
Had a pretty bad call on Tuesday despite the fact that I had very competent medical officers working with me. My hospital is bursting at the seams with patients and beds are getting scarce. I had 20 beds only on Tuesday, that too after I managed to persuade the head of the gynae department to 'loan' us 10 beds in her postnatal ward. She was very kind to oblige.
Much of the call was spent on trying to look for empty beds to accomodate the neverending stream of patients. Closing admission, while an option, was unthinkable. Only a consultant on call can close admission but she didn't.
Needless to say, we all slept little. Plus the fact I took over the running of the respiratory medicine ward yesterday (where I have to get acquainted with its >30 patients in residence) and a long chest clinic yesterday afternoon (83 patients, in which I saw 17 of them..yes I keep count but mainly for personal use, not as a vendetta), by the time I reached home, I was in a semi-zombie state.
Slept at 9.30pm till 6 am straight. Woke up with my classical migraine. Throbbing pain in my right eye and right side of the head plus a little blurring of vision. Feeling pain all over. My body shouted for rest!
Alas, no way! Today is cardiac clinic day and that means another opportunity for me to recruit more patients for my thesis. Now the grand total stands at 223. I hope to touch at least 350 by the end of the month. After that, I think I will slow down a little. Be a little more realistic, maybe even fatalistic.
God, heal my headache and grant me strength to run the clinic today. Let me have at least 25 patients today. Amen.
